Do you want to use XMPP as an instant messaging solution? And you don’t know how to start? You are at the right place!

Creating a chataddress

At first, you will need a chataddress. You can register a chataddress at jabbers.one (external). You just need to select a username and a passwort.

Installing a Messaging-App

Now, you need an app to use your chataddress for instant messaging. I will now recommend an app (depending on your preferences). If you change your mind later, you can switch from one app to another.

Android

It is important that the app is available in the Google Play Store? Additionally, the app has to be free.

I recommend to install Snikket (external). When you start Snikket for the first time, you can select that you already have an account. Afterwards, you can login using your chataddress and password.

It is important that the app is available in the Google Play Store? You do not mind if you have to spend some money for the app?

I recommend to install Conversations (external). When you start Conversations for the first time, you can select that you already have an account. Afterwards, you can login using your chataddress and password.

You want to use F-Droid for installing apps?

iPhone / iPad

I recommend to install Monal (external). When you start Monal for the first time, you can select that you already have an account. Afterwards, you can login using your chataddress and password. You can find a short tutorial here.

Congratulations. You are now using a free messenger. At the moment your contact list is empty. You can tell other people your chataddress to get in contact with them. Additionally, you can add chataddresses to your contact list.
